Explanation of FIA & Snell homologation on helmets
It is important to understand the difference between the homologations and choose a helmet that meets the standard for the purpose you want to use the helmet for, whether it is for motorsport or karting, for example.
It is the FIA and Snell that have paved the way for safety in motorsports and kart racing in Europe and the USA. FIA homologation is the homologation that is of greatest importance and has the highest requirements in terms of safety for motorsports and kart racing in Europe. There are helmets that meet and hold two homologations, in which case it is the FIA that has greater importance than Snell, especially in motorsport.
The current most current FIA homologation for "Premium Helmets" is FIA 8859-2015, which is the less stringent of the FIA approvals. It certifies helmets for use in motorsport with HANS/FHR (Front Head Restraint) use . This approval is one of the most widely used standards in the UK and Europe as HANS/FHR use is mandatory.
In addition to the FIA 8859-2015 homologation, there is the FIA 8860-2018 and 8860-2018 ABP (Advanced Ballistic Protection), which is the most stringent homologation in the world, in terms of impact energy absorption , penetration of sharp objects and HANS/FHR testing.
You will find the homologation ring on the inside of the helmet under the padding.
